SLC has worked with the Dean and Chapter and the Norwich Cathedral Trust on a very ambitious project to raise funds for renewing an area where monastic buildings once stood. With an original target of £4.75 million, this seemed a monumental task for Norfolk. After careful preparation, funds started flowing and the project began to be seen as achievable, but with a revised target of £10 million. Not only has the target of £10 million been achieved, but an additional grant of £2.3 million has been secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Norwich Cathedral now has a superb new Refectory on the site of the largest monastic refectory in the country (well worth a visit), new library facilities and has completed some urgently-required repairs to the magnificent Cloisters. Plans are in hand for a new Visitor and Education Centre on the site of the old monastic Hostry.
The Pinder Centre was opened in 1973 by Margaret Pinder, who had suffered severely from rheumatoid arthritis when she was young. Margaret wanted to help others with similar problems and therefore opened the Centre equipped with a warm pool. The facility provides hydrotherapy and physiotherapy for those with mobility problems and is a large factor in maintaining many people’s independence. By the late 1990s, it became obvious that the Centre needed renewal and so a plan was prepared to raise monies to enlarge and refurbish the Centre. A target of £750,000 also included provision for an endowment fund to benefit patients with financial constraint. The Pinder Centre has raised in excess of £800,000 in gifts and pledges, substantially exceeding the target. This charity is a small organization without a high profile, but with strong and loyal local support. SLC acted as consultants and advisers to the in-house team throughout the course of the fundraising. Completion of the extension to the Centre was celebrated with a visit from HRH Princess Alexandra.
The Rose Road Association provides education, therapy and respite for young people with severe disabilities and their families. SLC assisted this very worthwhile charity with fundraising and management advice during its campaign to raise funds for a new centre in Southampton. The campaign had slowed down to the point where momentum had been lost and the target was beginning to look unachievable. We undertook a study and suggested a way ahead for the campaign. With gentle advice and assistance, SLC set the campaign back on the path to success. The new Bradbury Centre is now open and in use after more than £5 million had been raised.
Small local churches do not often have such grand plans as St Mary’s! The Church had no domestic facilities at all. The Rector and PCC wanted to expand the congregation to include more of the young people of the parish and wanted a new space for events, social gatherings, Sunday School meetings etc. SLC’s first task was to ensure that the project was well-defined and that all Church supporters, and as many local residents as possible were in agreement with these aims. It was necessary to overcome some opposition. A good solid base of local support was created, which made the task of advising the campaign leadership a great pleasure for SLC. The original target was £265,000, but this was exceeded as the campaign raised more than £450,000 enabling superb new rooms to be built!
As one of the top amateur choirs in the country, the Waynflete Singers face the challenges of many other cultural groups - how to raise sufficient revenue to operate effectively. Over a period of years, SLC helped to build up sufficient reserves to provide a secure foundation upon which the Choir could operate. Since then, we have met the Fundraising Committee occasionally to review the Choir’s funding requirements. It’s a real treat to attend a Waynflete concert in Winchester Cathedral.
If you had been to the ‘old’ Winchester Theatre Royal, you would have soon realized why a development campaign was required! Any person of above average height found the seating very uncomfortable and there were very few facilities available in the foyer. SLC assisted the charity with an intensive period of consultancy in the first instance, reducing involvement once the campaign was established. The initial target of £2 million was substantially exceeded and funds raised (including a substantial Lottery grant) amounted to more than £5 million, enabling the re-development of the Theatre site. A next door shop building was incorporated into a new foyer area, new seating and ventilation was installed and the backstage amenities for performers and storage were improved dramatically. A visit is now highly recommended!
